Aromatherapy for Mother's Day

Mother's Day is a special time to celebrate the mother figures in our lives, or if you are a mother, to feel celebrated by those you’ve devoted your life to. Motherhood is amazing, but it certainly isn’t easy. We love our littles with all our hearts, and still it can feel like in many ways we lose ourselves in the identity of ‘mom,’ placing the mental, physical and emotional needs of everyone else before our own. If your children are still very young, fitting in a shower can feel like the most exquisite form of self-care rather than basic human hygiene. If you’re a working mom your mind and heart are often pulled in a million directions, wanting to give 100% to both your children and your work while simultaneously trying to find time to eat healthy, exercise, get the mythical 8 hours of sleep and make it look like it’s easy. If you’re a stay-at-home mom or don’t have a village to support the experience of motherhood, you might find yourself struggling with the isolation aspect of becoming a parent. Regardless of how motherhood looks for you, it is certainly the most rewarding and most difficult journey most of us will ever embark upon.

Whether you’re the mother who wants to spend the day surrounded by all your tiny (or not so tiny) humans or the mother who wants one day a year completely to herself, essential oils can help make your Mother’s Day the wonderful and relaxing experience that moms deserve. They can be used to create a joyful and uplifting ambiance in the home if you’re staying in and getting breakfast in bed, or to create your own spa experience at home if someone is able to take the kids for an hour or two so you can have some much-needed me time.

Essential Oils for Moms on this Mother’s Day

A few essential oils truly stand out as foundational aromas for well-deserved self-care and pampering. They can be used to create your own Mother’s Day magic (because let’s face it sometimes even that comes down to the moms to do) or if you’re looking for inspiration for creating a memorable Mother’s Day for the mother figure in your life. Aroma is deeply intertwined with memory, so essential oils can be a valuable tool for helping to create lasting joyful memories for moms and children.

  • Lavender: the quintessential aroma for relaxation, lavender essential oil should absolutely be a cornerstone of your Mother’s Day routine. Place a few drops of Aura Cacia Lavender Essential Oil onto a damp/hot washcloth to lay over your face while you wait for your coffee or breakfast in bed, or diffuse it throughout the house to keep your day as low-key as possible.
  • Eucalyptus: the clearing, invigorating aroma of eucalyptus is perfect for creating your in-home spa if you’re not able to get to a professional one this Mother’s Day. Get your bottle of Aura Cacia Eucalyptus Essential Oil, a bottle of your favorite skin care oil (such as Aura Cacia Jojoba Oil) and put a ‘Do Not Disturb’ sign on the bathroom door. Draw yourself a hot bath, and mix a few drops of eucalyptus oil with a tablespoon of skin care oil to add to the hot water. Close your eyes and breathe deeply as you feel all the tension melting out of your body. If you don’t have a bath, simply massage the mixture of skin care oil and eucalyptus essential oil into your skin before getting into a hot shower.
  • Rose: few oils embody self-care as much as rose essential oil. Its aroma is soothing and relaxing, and when used topically supports beautiful, glowing skin. Make mom a luxurious facial toner by combining 12 drops of Aura Cacia Rose Otto in Jojoba with 2 oz of distilled water and 1 tsp of Aura Cacia Vegetable Glycerin.
  • Sweet Orange: known as one of the most cheering of essential oils, sweet orange has the ability to create a joyful environment for any occasion. Diffuse Aura Cacia Sweet Orange Essential Oil during Mother’s Day brunch (especially if there is a lot of family coming over) or make a deodorizing carpet powder by combining 1 tsp of sweet orange essential oil and ½ cup baking soda that you can use when cleaning the house top to bottom so that mom doesn’t have to.
