We recently converted to 100% green power, a term for renewable, environmentally preferable energy sources (i.e. solar, wind, geothermal, etc.). Green power offers consumers a sound opportunity to support alternative technologies that reduce impact on the environment and are naturally renewable instead of conventional methods which use fossil or nuclear fuels (non-renewable resources) and which are potentially harmful to human health and toxic to the environment.
Frontier buys its green power, sold to us as renewable energy credits through Bonneville Environmental Foundation (BEF). A pioneer in the renewable energy credit industry, BEF developed its program, called Green Tags, in response to the demand for green power when it's not offered through local utilities, or where it's cost prohibitive. Revenue generated from the sale of Green Tags is reinvested into new and existing renewable energy projects.
Our purchase of Green Tags will offset energy traditionally generated by burning fossil fuels with renewable energy sources such as solar and wind power in an amount equaling 100% of the electrical energy used for all of our operations in our Iowa and Colorado facilities. At the same time, we are working to lower our overall demand through a lighting retrofit project, facility energy management systems, demand-side management programming, and monitoring of our on-and-off peak demand schedules with our local utility cooperative.
As a result of our commitment to renewable energy, we qualified to join the EPA (United States Environmental Protection Agency) Green Power Partnership Program. Our partnership with the EPA further demonstrates our environmental leadership and simultaneously reduces our impact on the environment.
We are proud to announce Frontier Direct is now offsetting carbon generated from shipping, making us one of the first distribution centers to provide 100% carbon neutral shipping.
