Blackened Shrimp Skewers Recipe from Frontier Natural Products Co-op

Shrimp Skewers

This recipe was created by a Frontier employee who loves spicy seafood -- and grilling -- all year round. It's a fusion of Cajun and Caribbean cuisines that balances heat, sweet and citrus flavors.

The Blackened Seafood Seasoning and honey caramelize into a light glaze on the shrimp, accented by savory garlic, a twist of lime and a hint of rum. Serve it as a party appetizer, or pair it with rice for a hearty entrée. Either way, these Blackened Shrimp Skewers are sure to bring back memories of long daylight hours and warm temperatures year round.

  • Prep Time: 60 minutes (includes soaking skewers and marinating shrimp)
  • Cook Time: 10 minutes

  • Total Time: 1 hour & 10 minutes
  • Serves: 6

  • 1 pound shrimp*, peeled and deveined
  • 2 tablespoons honey, plus more for drizzling
  • juice of 1 lime
  • 1 large garlic clove, pressed
  • 2 teaspoons Frontier Blackened Organic Seafood Seasoning, plus more for sprinkling the finished grilled shrimp
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • 1 tablespoon rum (optional)
  • 6 to 8 wood skewers

* The Monterey Bay Aquarium Seafood Watch lists the following varieties of shrimp as “Best Choice”: black tiger shrimp, freshwater prawn, pink shrimp, shrimp (U.S.), spot prawn (Canadian Pacific).

  1. Soak skewers in water for up to an hour to prevent charring.
  2. Wash and drain shrimp.
  3. Whisk together honey, lime juice, garlic, Seafood Seasoning, olive oil and rum for the marinade.
  4. Transfer shrimp to a large bowl. Pour marinade over shrimp, coating well. Chill for 30 minutes.
  5. Preheat grill to medium-high heat.
  6. Thread shrimp onto skewers. Drizzle additional honey over skewers and brush to coat evenly, then brush on additional marinade.
  7. Grill shrimp on medium-high for 5 minutes per side. Brush with remaining marinade while grilling.
  8. Sprinkle grilled shrimp with additional Seafood Seasoning.
