Fun Food Gifts for the Wedding Couple

Fun Food Gifts for the Wedding Couple

Turn to food for practical, creative wedding gift ideas.

Check any wedding registry, and you're apt to find an abundance of kitchen-related items, from cooking utensils to serving dishes and flatware. And that makes good sense, since many newlyweds are setting up home together for the first time. If you'd like to present the couple with a gift that has a bit more pizzazz, though, look beyond the dishes and pots and pans to the food itself. There are many creative ways to fashion a gift around a cooking theme, with or without a registry item as a starting point.

Examples of food-inspired wedding gifts that are
practical and creative:

tea infuser

* Tuck small handmade packages of loose-leaf teas into a shiny stainless teapot. Tie a ribbon on the handle. Choose from herbal teas, such as chamomile and peppermint; black and oolong teas, such as Darjeeling and almond blossom flavored oolong; and green and white teas, such as bancha, Earl Grey, and strawberry flavored green tea. You might also include some tea accessories, such as tea tidies and tea bags or infusers.

* Combine a pizza cutter, a wedge of Parmesan, some baking yeast, and an array of pizza seasonings—such as oregano, basil, and garlic powder, or a Pizza Seasoning blend in a mixing bowl lined with a red-checkered cloth or potholder. Set atop a pizza stone, if you like.

mortar and pestle

* Fill a spice rack with basic spices for setting up a new kitchen. (Choose your own, or purchase a rack that comes with spices.) Include a cookbook for beginning cooks or one by a favorite cooking show author. Or provide a collection of your own best recipes (on a disc or in a notebook or index box). Consider adding a mortar and pestle for grinding spices, too.

* Corral some Grilling Seasonings and utensils in a grilling basket. Include some long mitts and a gift certificate for grilling fare. ("I'll bring the steaks when you fire up the grill," for example.)

* Share your sought-after dressing recipe (or look up one that's full of spice!). Place in a salad bowl along with a whisk, wooden serving utensils and the needed spices and other ingredients, such as oils and vinegars. You could also tuck in a few packages of convenient Salad Dressing Mixes. Add some homemade croutons and pretty table linens.

* Purchase a canning pot and fill it with canning supplies, such as canning funnels and jars. Include some recipes, along with canning and pickling spices, such as bay leaves, black peppercorns, celery seed, chili peppers, cumin seed, dill seed, mustard seed, salt, turmeric seed, whole allspice, and whole cloves. Be sure to tuck in a Pickling Spice Blend, too.
