How to choose a skin care oil

Skin care oils are extracted from nuts, seeds and kernels. They consist mainly of a balance of antioxidant unsaturated fatty acids and more emollient saturated fatty acids. Unsaturated fatty acids impart the nutty aroma associated with unrefined oils, and contribute a thin, absorbent texture. Oils with a high proportion of unsaturated fatty acids are well-suited to fine skin care and warming massage applications (because they are less slippery and therefore facilitate warming friction). Saturated fatty acids can have a more neutral aroma and a thicker, less absorbent texture, making oils that have them well suited to bath and body care as well as extended massage applications. To choose a skin care oil that's right for you, explore the characteristics of each oil, identify which specfic purpose you'd like to use the oil for and try a few out to see what you think.

1. Apricot Kernel Oil

An excellent all-purpose oil. Use it as a bath and body oil, for smooth glide during massage and as a multipurpose base oil in DIY body lotions, creams, salves and soaps.

2. Argan Oil

With a good balance of saturated and unsaturated fatty acids, use argan in hair, scalp and facial care products and applications.

3. Avocado Oil

A rich textured oil with a balance of saturated and unsaturated fatty acids, use avocado as a multipurpose oil in DIY bath and body care formulations.

4. Baobab Oil

With it's very well balanced make up of saturated and unsaturated fatty acids, baobab oil is an outstanding choice for just about any application from face and body care to massage.

5. Castor Oil

Contains ricinoleic fatty acid, a long chain fatty acid. Use castor oil as a base in homemade soaps or on a flannel cloth in a soothing heat pack.

6. Grapeseed Oil

Fairly balanced in saturated and unsaturated fatty acids, grapeseed is a light textured oil appropriate for bath, body and skin care applications.

7. Jojoba Oil

Because it's low in fatty acids, but high in non-pore clogging wax esters, jojoba is a uniquely valuable oil that makes a fine lotion or cream replacement in face and body care.

8. Macadamia Oil

With a good balance of saturated and unsaturated fatty acids, macadamia makes a great all-purpose bath, body and massage oil.

9. Rosehip Seed Oil

Another choice for fine facial care applications, rosehip oil is very high in non-greasy, absorbant unsaturated fatty acids.

10. Sesame Oil

Balanced in saturated and unsaturated fatty acids, use sesame as a bath oil, body oil or in massage applications.

11. Sweet Almond Oil

An excellent all purpose bath, body or massage oil.

12. Tamanu Oil

With a balance of saturated and unsaturated fatty acids, use tamanu as a purifying base in body and facial care applications.
