Our vetiver essential oil supplier is in Haiti. (Haiti is the world’s largest producer of vetiver and their vetiver is the preferred standard in the industry.) When we last visited them, we stopped by the library we helped rebuild in the city of Les Cayes after the earthquake in 2010.
The library was completely destroyed by the earthquake and was not likely to be rebuilt without help. Aura Cacia donated $26,000 to rebuild the building and provide plumbing and electricity. Our Haitian suppliers also gave money, furniture and books. There are a total of 50 schools that will now use this library, serving kids from primary school up through high school. Kids come from the rural areas as well as the city and include many children of the vetiver workers.
The library is a large white building with a beautiful courtyard. Inside is a large room with a reception desk, several rows of bookshelves and a back room with individual desks where computers will be installed. The library’s director since 1992, Emmanuel Maisonnouvea, is very proud of the renovation and excited that adults as well as children in the community are using the new library.
The library now holds 5,000 books and texts, with room for another 5,000 that are being donated.
