Sourcing Notes: La Cooperativa Agraria Industrial Naranjillo Limitada was founded in 1964 by 32 farmers in the Naranjillo region of Peru. The cooperative was founded in response to the excessively low prices the farmers traditionally received for their cocoa and coffee crops. Today comprised of 7,363 members, Naranjillo is the largest producer of organic cocoa in Peru. Fair Trade Certified with the Fair Trade Labeling Organizations International (FLO) in 2004, Naranjillo consistently strives to improve the quality of life of its farmers and the quality of its cocoa. The cooperative hopes to gain organic certification for 90% of its cocoa by 2008.
