It's important to realize that essential oils are very powerful and concentrated. It's a good idea to know which oils are the gentlest and most mild and how to properly dilute them before using them in kid-friendly activities. Here are 3 important things to know about kid-safe essential oil use.
1. Dilute essential oils at 1% rate
Kids have smaller bodies and more sensitive constitutions so they naturally require smaller amounts of essential oil to realize the same benefits as adults. Fortunately, the math couldn't be easier, simply use a 1% dilution for kids, which translates to 1 drop per teaspoon of the carrier substance, be it soap, vegetable oil or bubble bath.
2. Choose mild and gentle essential oils
Some oils are more aggressively therapeutic, (tea tree, camphor) while others are much more gentle and engaging. Choose the later when conducting fun and engaging essential oil activities with kids, such as: chamomile, geranium, grapefruit, lavender, lemon, sweet orange, rose and tangerine.
3. Use kid-friendly essential oil applications
Because essential oils are so powerful, look to applications that are well diluted and activities that involve experiencing the aroma of the oil rather than a direct application on the skin. Such as the using a bubble or bath oil which increases the dilution many-fold in the water of the tub rather than a body oil applied directly to the skin.
