Tea tree is one of the most-used essential oils, but did you know that there's more than one kind of tea tree? What's more, some tea trees sold are blends, tough to distinguish from the genuine oils distilled from the selected species. Aura Cacia Tea Tree, Lemon Tea Tree and Lavender Tea Tree are each distilled from single botanicals. Read on to learn why that makes them unique.
"Tea tree" is a generic term that describes a variety of aromatic shrubs native to Australia. Early Western explorers noted both the tea-like appearance of the plants and the way the aboriginal populations used the leaves, and so adopted tea tree as a tea substitute for long voyages. Australian tea trees, members of the Myrtaceae family, include an incredibly diverse group of plants that encompass many different genera and individual species. All of them, however, contain essential oils in their leaves.
In addition to traditional Tea Tree (Melaleuca alternifolia), Aura Cacia offers two other tea tree oils that are distilled from unique, individual species — Lemon Tea Tree and Lavender Tea Tree. These essential oils have the purifying qualities of classic tea tree oil, but offer the distinct aromas of their respective plants. Do not confuse these with blends of traditional tea tree (Melaleuca alternifolia) and unrelated essential oils, such as lemon or lavender. Aura Cacia Lemon Tea Tree and Lavender Tea Tree essential oils are each distilled from a single, unique botanical species. This is important because a blend does not have the same aroma profile nor the same benefits as the single-botanical essential oil.
The first tea tree that was commercially distilled for its well-known essential oil was Melaleuca alternifolia. Commonly known as "tea tree", this oil is one of the most valuable and utilized essential oils in the world. It features a potent medicinal-like aroma with a slightly spicy, almost nutmeg-like character. The oil is used in purifying, cleansing and protecting topical applications, such as shampoo and hand soap.
True lemon tea tree yields an oil with a delightful, lemony aroma. Don’t let its candy-like, sweet scent beguile you into thinking it is an ineffective oil, however. Lemon tea tree packs all of the cleansing and protecting power of Aura Cacia Tea Tree essential oil.
True lavender tea tree yields an oil with a soft, rosy, lavender-like aroma. It is characterized by its soothing qualities, and aroma, and provides the purifying, cleansing and protecting benefit that is so unique to all Aura Cacia Tea Tree essential oils.
