Lavender

You should also know that the sale of inferior substitutes for true lavender is often "supported" by misinformation about lavender. Savvy lavender users avoid products promoted by these misleading claims. Don't be fooled by these commonly asserted myths:

Myth: Only France produces pure lavender oil.
Fact:
While France was at one time the center of true lavender production, the French industry today is dominated by the production of lavandin. High quality lavender is now cultivated in many places, including Ukraine, Bulgaria, and China.

Myth: If the bottle is labeled as “lavender” it has to contain lavender oil.
Fact:
Many manufacturers don’t distinguish between lavender and lavandin, while others consider them the same botanical. U.S. labeling regulations permit even synthetic fragrances to be labeled as "lavender."

Myth: If it smells like lavender, it is lavender.
Fact:
Highly trained olfactory experts are able to consistently identify true lavender oil, but many people can be deceived by the sophisticated adulteration of lavandin oil to make it smell more like true lavender. Lavandin can be blended with other oils and aromatic chemicals to sweeten the aroma and mimic the scent of true lavender.
