The most widely used, best selling--and arguably most valuable--essential oil
in aromatherapy practice is lavender, distilled from the Lavandula angustifolia plant. But pure, authentic lavender is not nearly as widely available as one might suppose.

Most of the products labeled as containing lavender are actually made with the essential oil of lavandin, the hybrid offspring of true lavender and spike lavender. Spike lavender (Lavandula latifolia) is highly camphorous, with an aroma that resembles eucalyptus or rosemary, while true lavender is softer and purely floral-herbaceous. The aroma of lavandin falls somewhere in between--sweet, but with a distinct camphorous, medicinal undertone.

True lavender essential oil has long been used to soothe summer-exposed skin. A simple solution of 1 oz. water and 10-20 drops lavender essential oil in a mist application will do the trick! Lemon Eucalyptus

This botanical cousin of common eucalyptus has a distinct lemony, grassy aroma that's very reminiscent of citronella. In fact, both oils share the same naturally occurring chemical constituent -- citronellol -- that insects such as mosquitoes find extremely off-putting. Lemon eucalyptus is distilled from the leaves and stems of the tropical tree of the same name. The aroma is a natural and effective addition to summertime sprays for camping, picnicking and evenings on the patio.

Skin Protecting Oil

1 tablespoon jojoba oil
1 tablespoon almond or apricot kernel oil
1 tablespoon grapeseed oil
10 drops lemon eucalyptus oil
17 drops lavender essential oil

Mix ingredients. Apply and smooth over exposed skin.

4 ounces bottled or distilled water
6 drops lemon eucalyptus oil
3 drops lemon essential oil
3 drops lemongrass essential oil
3 drops citronella essential oil
