Aromatherapy blends that complement workout routines are one of the fastest growing uses of aromatherapy today.
A workout blend can inspire a positive attitude about improving health and appearance. The invigorating, inspiring and uplifting properties of essential oils can help boost confidence and commitment to a thorough workout in several ways. Some oils are activating, others soothe and calm, and still others fight workout odors.
Basil, cypress, eucalyptus, fir needle, ginger, grapefruit, juniper berry, lavender, lemon, lemongrass, lime, orange, peppermint, petitgrain, rosemary and thyme.
cedarwood, chamomile, frankincense, jasmine, lavender, neroli, patchouli, rose, rosewood, sandalwood and ylang ylang.
All citrus oils, including bergamot, grapefruit, limon, lime, orange, and tangerine. Other anti-odor oils are coriander, fir needle, juniper berry and lavender.
Application methods vary, but it's important to remember that essential oils should be diluted before they are applied to skin. This is not only a common sense safety precaution with these highly concentrated natural substances but it is also common courtesy. An overpowering aroma can distract you from your workout or bother others around you. Remember that the effects of these blends are activated by body heat. What may seem to be a small dose may become overwhelming once you start to burn those calories.
A light dilution rate -- 1% essential oil added to a carrier such as vegetable oil, mineral bath salts, pure water; or unscented bath products like shampoo, conditioner or shower gel -- will achieve the subtle yet dynamic effects of workout blends.
A water spray mister is a convenient way to enjoy the benefits of a workout blend. The mist can be applied directly or sprayed lightly into a workout towel. Essential oils and water don't mix well, so shake the bottle vigorously before spraying.
